Much has been said about an extremely strong Lok Pal Bill to eliminate the sceptre of corruption. The irony is that for this to become reality, we need the support and endorsement of the very people who will be hurt most by such a legislation.
Maybe its time to look for ways to get around this. Assuming that in the present environment, most of the law makers themselves would not be spotlessly clean, chances of their passing a legislation which would crucify them first of all are fairly remote.
But if the objective is that going forward, from tomorrow, corruption should decrease, maybe we need to be a little more creative.
Perhaps giving the lawmakers the assurance that past lapses will not be looked into, but going forward there would be severe penalties for corrupt practices, would help in their coming out with a strong anti-corruption legislation (or even more effective implementation of the existing laws). I'm sure those in power could work out something along the lines of an amnesty scheme, or something similar, which would give them comfort that they are not going to be hauled up for past crimes, but future lapses would be a different story altogether. Their hoards of wealth from the past are any way not accesssible at present, but atleast the future for the country and its ordinary citizens would be brighter and cleaner. Something for the people to think about.
